A common recommendation for laying out tile is that the edge pieces should not be less than half the width of the tile. Here's an interesting way to do that.
I don't know. Most tile specs I've seen require the edge pieces to be at least half a tile, and require uniform joint widths. I don't know if the specs had a requirement for so many years' experience, but it wouldn't mean much if the tile setter had always done this. I've never had much faith in experience requirements.
