"1. Where rough carpentry is exposed to weather, in ground contact, or in area of high relative humidity, provide fasteners with hot-dip zinc coating complying with ASTM A153/A153M of Type 304 stainless steel."
Galvanized stainless steel! I wonder what they want for below-grade fasteners.
Maybe that "of" near the end of the sentence should have been "or".
Is there any reason to specify both A153 and A153M? Doesn't the first also include the second?
ReplyDeleteI've often wondered why both versions are cited.
ReplyDeleteHaving specified architectural products for more than 2 score years, I have always referenced the imperial and not the metric … unless mandated by the Owner. My current firm has taken the ‘official’ position of using both, since ASTM uses both in their ‘official’ title of a standard, when applicable. Hence my firm requires the use of the ‘official’ title and for the standard referenced in this posting would be “ASTM A153/A153M Standard Specification for Zinc Coating (Hot-Dip) on Iron and Steel Hardware.” Use of the metric drives me crazy, especially when no metric is referenced in the specification. Not my choice.
ReplyDeleteSheldon: Did not know it would record me as 'unknown'. Dennis Buirge, RA, CSI, CCS, CCCA. Graduated 2 years before you from Penn State.
DeleteHappened to attend a box lunch today by a galvanizing company in business since 1890. He said they can/have galvanized carbon steel, weathering steel, AND stainless steel.
DeleteThanks for the comments, Dennis. When citing a title I use whatever the publisher uses, but in an inline reference I omit the metric equivalent.
DeleteI don't know how the comment process works. Some people have no problems, some show up as anonymous, and some can't comment at all.
I know it is possible to galvanize some types of stainless steel, but I have not encountered it in construction. Did the galvanizing company way where it is used?
They did not, just that it could be done. I have yet to specify that or see it specified. BTW, I go by Denny.
ReplyDeleteSee the next post for an item advertised as both stainless steel and galvanized. http://bit.ly/1YyN6pp
